What Makes a Great School Camp? 7 Things Teachers Should Look For

I've taken students to eleven different camp venues over my teaching career. Some were forgettable. A few were frustrating. But three of them? Those camps changed my students in ways I still think about years later.

The difference between a mediocre camp and a transformative one isn't the flying fox. It's not the size of the lake or how new the cabins are.

It's something deeper – and once you know what to look for, you'll never book a camp the same way again.

Here are the seven factors that separate great school camps from the rest.

1. Experienced, Engaged Staff

This is the single most important factor, and it's the one most often overlooked.

Great camp staff aren't just supervisors watching from the sidelines. They're mentors who know how to connect with young people, read group dynamics, and create moments of genuine growth.

What to look for:

  • Staff who've worked multiple seasons (low turnover is a good sign)
  • Genuine enthusiasm when they talk about working with kids
  • Qualifications beyond the minimum requirements
  • A willingness to adapt activities based on your students' needs

Red flag: If you can't meet or speak with the activity leaders before booking, ask yourself why.

2. Purposeful Programming

Entertainment is easy. Transformation takes intention.

The best camps design every activity with learning outcomes in mind – even if students don't realise it. A bushwalk isn't just a bushwalk; it's an opportunity to build observation skills, practice resilience, and have conversations that wouldn't happen in a classroom.

What to look for:

  • Clear articulation of what students will gain from each activity
  • Programs that can be tailored to your school's goals
  • Reflection and debrief built into the schedule
  • A balance of challenge, teamwork, and individual growth

Red flag: If the camp can only describe activities ("We have kayaking and archery") but not outcomes ("Students develop confidence through managed risk"), dig deeper.

3. Safe But Not Sanitised

Here's a truth that makes some parents uncomfortable: children need appropriate risk to grow.

The best school camps understand the difference between danger (unacceptable) and challenge (essential). They create environments where students can push their limits, experience manageable discomfort, and discover they're capable of more than they thought.

What to look for:

  • Comprehensive risk management documentation
  • Staff trained in activity-specific safety
  • A philosophy that embraces challenge, not just comfort
  • Clear communication about how risks are managed

Red flag: A camp that promises "no risk" is either misleading you or wrapping students in cotton wool. Neither serves your students well.

4. A Genuine Natural Environment

There's a reason outdoor education works: nature does something to us that built environments can't replicate.

The best camps are set in genuine bush, forest, or rural landscapes – not manicured resort grounds with a token "nature walk." Students should encounter wildlife, feel weather, and experience the sensory richness of the Australian outdoors.

What to look for:

  • A setting that feels genuinely removed from suburban life
  • Opportunities for unstructured time in nature
  • Activities that use the natural environment, not just take place near it
  • Limited or no mobile phone reception (yes, this is a feature)

Red flag: If the camp looks like a conference centre with grass, your students won't get the full benefits of outdoor education.

5. Flexibility and Customisation

Your Year 5 cohort is different from every other Year 5 cohort. Your school's values and goals are unique. A great camp recognises this.

The best providers will spend time understanding what you want to achieve and tailor their program accordingly. They'll ask questions, offer options, and collaborate with you on the schedule.

What to look for:

  • A pre-camp planning conversation (not just a booking form)
  • Willingness to adjust activities, timing, or focus areas
  • Options for different ability levels and needs
  • Responsiveness to your questions and requests

Red flag: "This is our standard program, take it or leave it" suggests a camp that prioritises their convenience over your students' needs.

6. Strong Communication

A great camp experience starts well before the bus arrives – and continues after students return home.

The best providers communicate clearly and proactively. They give you everything you need to prepare students and parents, keep you informed during camp, and follow up afterwards.

What to look for:

  • Detailed information packs for teachers and parents
  • Clear emergency contact procedures
  • Regular updates during camp (if requested)
  • Post-camp feedback or debrief opportunities

Red flag: If getting answers to basic questions feels like pulling teeth before you've even booked, imagine what communication will be like during camp.

7. Values Alignment

This one's harder to measure, but it matters enormously.

The best camp experiences happen when the camp's philosophy aligns with your school's values. If your school prioritises student agency, you need a camp that empowers choice. If you value environmental stewardship, you need a camp that models it.

What to look for:

  • A clearly articulated philosophy or mission
  • Evidence that values are lived, not just stated
  • Staff who embody the camp's culture
  • Alignment with your school's approach to behaviour, inclusion, and wellbeing

Red flag: If a camp can't tell you what they stand for beyond "fun and safety," they may not stand for much at all.

The Bottom Line

Price matters. Location matters. Facilities matter. But none of these factors will create a transformative experience on their own.

When you find a camp that gets these seven things right, you'll see students return to school different – more confident, more connected, more capable. You'll hear them reference the experience months later. You'll watch friendships form that wouldn't have happened otherwise.

That's what a great school camp delivers. And it's worth holding out for.

At Camp Cooby, we've built our programs around these principles. We'd love to show you what that looks like in practice. Book a site visit or request a quote to start the conversation.
